For Immediate Release – Brush Fire near Sewell Mesa
Carbondale, Colo. – Update #2 5:45 p.m.

Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District is on scene of a 20 acre wildfire near Sustainable Settings, on Sewell Mesa.

A Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) made drop, and has returned to Grand Junction air base to reload and make another drop. A helicopter is also working on this fire.

The fire is estimated at 10% containment. Currently, no structures are threated and no homes have been lost. Pre-evacuation notices were sent to homes in the Red Dog Road area.

Pitkin County Sheriff's Department and Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District are asking all residents in the county to be fire aware due to the high wildfire danger in the area.

Mutual aid on scene is from Glenwood Springs Fire Department, Basalt Fire District, Snowmass-Wildcat Fire District, Aspen Fire Department, Upper Colorado River Fire Crew, Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control, US Forest Service Control and the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department.

Slower speeds in Cattle Creek area
Garfield County is constructing acceleration and deceleration lanes at the Cattle Creek intersection of Highway 82. In the construction zone, the speed limit is reduced to 40 mph during working hours, and 50 mph in evening/overnight periods. The county expenditure is to make the intersection safer for motorists entering highway 82 or exiting on the County Road 113 (Cattle Creek) intersection.

Garfield County has received 138 records from a Freedom of Information request to the US Department of Interior via a lawsuit. The county found the DOI did not get public input on late changes to its EIS for Northwest Colorado.

July 29 - BLM takes next step toward resolving Thompson Divide issues
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Friday. The BLM's Preferred Alternative in the Final EIS would cancel the 25 undeveloped leases within the area known as the Thompson Divide; apply new stipulations to the remaining leases that are not currently producing oil or gas; and make no or only minor adjustments for leases that are producing. July 28 - Stage 1 fire restrictions begin July 29 for Bureau of Land Management-administered lands in Garfield County. 

BLM will enforce these temporary restrictions:
•   campfires are only allowed within designated fire grates in developed campgrounds (i.e. a metal, in-ground containment structure -- fire pans and rock campfire rings are not acceptable)
•   no fires of any type including charcoal outside of developed areas
•   no smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or in a barren area free of vegetation
•   no use of explosive materials
•   no welding or operation of an acetylene or other similar torch with open flame except from an area that has been cleared of vegetation
•   no operation of any internal combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed and in working order

Fireworks are always prohibited on BLM, National Forest and National Park Service lands.
