PRESS RELEASE
February 11, 2019

Marine Corps veteran Lisa Reed-Scott takes the helm through 2020

GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. - Garfield County has named Lisa Reed-Scott its new veterans service officer, which helps local veterans connect with needed services and benefits. The U.S. Marine Corps veteran has signed on to serve in the role through 2020.

The Michigan native worked at the Colorado Veterans Community Living Center in Rifle for 11 years, and understands the roadblocks veterans face when seeking assistance.

"I understand how difficult it can be to get paperwork processed correctly, and to be able to get in contact with the right people," Reed-Scott said. "It's important to me to help other veterans and their families in our community."

After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1995, the communications specialist settled in Garfield County the following year. Reed-Scott worked as an administrative assistant and human resources manager while at the veterans' center. She holds Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Kaplan University.

"She's an extremely strong candidate," Deputy County Manager Fred Jarman told the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). "She'll be working out of both the Veterans' Services office here in Glenwood Springs, and the administration building in Rifle."

Reed-Scott said a common issue for veterans is to acquire a new DD Form 214, which is issued upon a veteran's retirement, separation or discharge from the military. These forms can get lost over time, and it can be a difficult process to attain new documents. These forms are needed to verify a veteran's military service in order to receive benefits.

"It's important to help veterans with this information," she said. "They have questions that need answering, and that's where I can help."

The BOCC approved Reed-Scott's appointment unanimously, 3-0. Her contract with the county is for two years beginning on Jan. 14, at a salary of $45,000 annually. The post was formerly held by Navy veteran Greg Bak, who stepped down Dec. 31, 2018, after serving for two years.

She will operate out of the county offices at 803 Colorado Ave. in Glenwood Springs, and 195 West 14th Street, Building A, in Rifle.

"I can't wait to help Garfield County's veterans and their families," Reed-Scott said. "Our veterans must feel that they are supported."
